Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was introduced to art through her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay quickly was captivated when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize art as a method of expression. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury and look through their trash. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
